The Area

Redesdale is a special area situated literally on the very edge of England and the Scottish Borders. It is a place to escape to and a land with a history as dramatic as the scenery.

For those interested in history, you don’t need to travel very far to experience the drama of times gone by. In the nearby village of Rochester is Brigantium – A living archaeological site reconstructing the homes of everyday people that inhabited this area in prehistoric times.

In the nearby village of Otterburn, you can visit the site where the famous Battle of Otterburn took place in 1388. Now remembered in the ballad by Walter Scott in the Battle of Chevy Chase. Although technically a Scottish victory, in truth as in so many battles, both sides lost many men in bloody and prolonged hand to hand fighting.

The Northumbrian coastline boasts something for everybody – from spectacularly dramatic cliff top walks to mile upon mile of glorious golden sandy beaches. There are castles aplenty, including; Lindisfarne, the birthplace of Christianity in England, magnificent Bamburgh, complete with it’s own dragon legend and Arthurian connection, romantic Dunstanburgh perched on a cliff-top and Warkworth, so well preserved it has been used in numerous films.

It is also worth remembering that the Redesdale Arms is only a very short distance from the Scottish Borders – and there is much to discover and explore just over the border which is less than 30 minutes away.
